Andy Murray tucks into sushi after tennis matches

All eyes were on Andy Murray this summer as he showed his skills on Centre Court at Wimbledon. As well as his tennis abilities, the Scot’s eating habits were in the spotlight.

It emerged that the sports star munches his way through mountains of sushi. Like an increasing number of people in the UK, it seems as though he is making the most of sushi delivery services on a regular basis.

High-powered

One of the great things about sushi is the fact that as well as tasting fabulous, it’s healthy. This is something Murray is obviously well aware of. According to a report in the Daily Mail, the tennis player gets through piles of sushi as part of a high-powered diet and exercise regime.

The 24-year-old eats an impressive 6,000 calories a day of high-protein, high-carbohydrate food, the news source stated. It added that the athlete consumes up to 50 pieces of sushi a day.

The perfect mix

Commenting on the benefits of sushi, the newspaper said: “The perfect mix of protein and carbohydrates in sushi rebuilds his muscles and provides energy for subsequent matches.”

Of course, Murray doesn’t live on sushi alone. For breakfast, he reportedly has two bowls of cereal and a few bagels with lashings of peanut butter. On match days, he loads up on pasta and chicken and he finishes his meals with fruit and yoghurts. For snacks, Murray tucks into cereal bars and drinks vanilla-flavoured protein shakes.

Expert tips

Offering her insights into Murray’s diet, leading sport nutritionist Dr Karen Reid said: “The primary thing is to supply the energy – the fuel – he needs. Carbohydrates (lots of pasta and rice) provide fuel that keeps your blood-sugar level at the right level. If your blood-sugar dips, then so does your concentration level – the notorious ‘carb crash’, where you become hypoglycaemic. These carbs are stored as glycogen in your muscles. If they run out during a marathon match, you come to the point where your body and mind simply become exhausted.”

A packed schedule

Like Murray, you might lead a busy life. When you’re schedule is packed, it’s hard to find time to cook up a storm in the kitchen. This is why it’s so good to be able to take advantage of delivery sushi.
