What have you been eating this summer?

From the Jubilee to Euro 2012, a special Wimbledon to the Olympics, it’s been a summer of spectacle, sport and being rooted to the sofa – the latter not least because of the rain!

Many might make a sneaking admission that the food they’ve been enjoying during all these events has given them as much pleasure as the events themselves, if not more. And, for many of us, food has perhaps been a consolation as Andy Murray and England’s football team got so near – and yet so far.

One survey, held ahead of this year’s Gut Week, reveals that more than half (54%) of Brits admitted before the summer of sport that they would be likely to overindulge. Nearly a fifth said they would be eating more fast food, a quarter that they would be consuming more alcohol.

The survey, of hundreds of British adults, reported that 1 in 10 said they would be enjoying more sweet treats during the likes of the Olympics and Wimbledon.

But, while it can be all too easy to get swept up in the excitement of the spectacular thrills of the great sporting events, it’s also important to pace yourself.

The same research found that a staggering 85% of us aren’t aware of the negative effects that some foods have on how we feel, especially where what we eat is too spicy or fatty or overly processed. One takeaway pizza, for example, can contain over 10 grams of salt.

Equally, give yourself time to relax and enjoy your meal slowly.

Why sushi is a healthy option

Next time you reach for the phone to order a takeaway as you settle down in front of the Olympics or any other TV sport, think about a sushi delivery. Its fish is low in cholesterol and saturated fats, while the thin sheets of seaweed are dense in minerals like iodine, magnesium, calcium, iron and more.

Healthier options

To ensure your sushi is even healthier, especially if you enjoy these Japanese dishes regularly, go easy occasionally on extras like mayo and cream cheese, and soy sauce which can be quite salty.

For a balanced sushi feast, enjoy tasty rolls packed with super-nutritious vegetables – shiitake mushrooms, avocado, and cucumber are great examples.

Leave it to the pros

Another tip for eating with confidence is to leave it to the pros! They are highly skilled and trained in handling uncooked fish. Most home freezers don’t have the low temperatures required for properly freezing raw fish, for example.
